Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for December

It’s time for end-of-the-year organizing.

De-clutter, help others, and get in one last tax deduction -- all at the same time.  You can accomplish these things by making donations.  Go through closets, bedrooms, children's play areas, and any other part of your home or office that could use some tidying up.  Donate anything that is not being used or going to be used in the near future.

The above organizing tip is taken from my booklet, "36 Home Organizing Ideas for Your Family Around the Year". Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for November

It’s time to get ready for the cold weather.

"Winterize" the outside of your home.  Bring your outside potted plants inside the house.  Store garden and lawn care equipment, as well as outdoor recreational equipment (bicycles, sports equipment, etc.), in the garage, basement, or shed.  Maximize the space in your garage by storing things on shelves, and hanging things from hooks on the ceiling and walls (you can install peg boards on walls to hold hooks).

Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for August

It’s back-to-school time.

Set up a system that involves preparation the night before workdays/schooldays: make lunches, pick out clothing and accessories, and put things to take to work/school in briefcases/book bags so they're ready to go the next morning. It also helps to establish a consistent place to keep briefcases/book bags.

Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for July

This is a great time for organizing areas of your home that are normally too cold to work in, like your garage and basement.  Purge as much as you can, and then store similar items together using boxes, bins, shelves, racks, and hooks.  Label the containers/areas so that you can easily locate items in the future.

Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for June

School’s out.

Now is a great time for you and your children to go through their papers, artwork, and awards from the just-ended school year.  Pick out the favorite/best items, and toss the remaining items.  By doing this each year, you will get a chance to “go down memory lane” with your children, and limit the amount of children’s memorabilia you have to store.

The above organizing tip is taken from my booklet, "36 Home Organizing Ideas for Your Family Around the Year". This 16-page booklet provides month-by-month, timely tips to help you and your family organize your home. Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for May

It’s spring-cleaning time.
Choose an area to de-clutter, and gather a large garbage and/or recycle container, a box or boxes for donations/garage sale/consignment, and a box for items that go elsewhere -- i.e., don’t belong in the area you are de-cluttering.  Sort items into these containers, and then deliver the “goes elsewhere” items to their proper places.

Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for April

After you finish your taxes, use this time to get back to daily paper management.

When you get the mail, sort it the same day into different categories, such as trash, mail for yourself, mail for your spouse, and mail for each of your children. Trash should immediately go into the garbage or recycle bin. Bills should go to whoever pays them. Each category should go into a mail slot (a paper tray, cubby hole, file, etc.), and each person in the family should be made responsible for clearing out his/her slot on a daily basis.

If there are items addressed to you that you need to discuss with your spouse or kids, put that in a “discuss” slot, and clear out that slot at least once a week. If you have a stack (or box, or boxes) of old, unopened mail, add a small portion from that stack to today’s mail.

Home Organizing Tip-of-the-Month for February

February 14 is Valentine's Day.

Organize a room as a present to your sweetheart. First, get rid of outdated and unused items. For example, recycle old magazines and catalogs, and donate household items (clothing, linens, etc.) no longer worn or used. Then, assign a place for everything you are keeping. Use drawers, containers, and dividers to group similar items, and separate dissimilar items. Label assigned areas, if necessary.

The above organizing tip is taken from my booklet, "36 Home Organizing Ideas for Your Family Around the Year". This 16-page booklet provides month-by-month, timely tips to help you and your family organize your home. My booklet also makes a great gift to friends, family, colleagues, clients, and potential clients.  To order a hard copy or an eBook version of my booklet, please see http://www.thecluttercoach.com/#Products.  I also have two additional organizing eBooks listed there.
